For it is in giving that we receive.
- St. Francis of Assisi
At Brookfield Academy, there are times when you see someone in action and think immediately, “That person was born to be a teacher.” Through their enthusiasm for the subject matter and genuine love for their students, they simply embody the qualities essential to a successful academic experience for those they teach.
In the spirit of her favorite quote, anyone who had the pleasure of working with or being taught by Mrs. Jayne Hinkens would truly say she was the epitome of St. Francis of Assisi’s ideal. Over her 40 years of teaching English, BA students and colleagues all benefited from Jayne’s wisdom, patience, kindness, and essential contributions in an always busy Middle School atmosphere. Her ability to balance care and compassion with high standards serves as an inspiration for all of us.
In 2024, to honor her legacy, the Hinkens Family established the Jayne Hinkens Memorial English Scholarship Award. This merit-based, non-renewable tuition award will be given to a 6th grade student who demonstrates, through his or her actions, a genuine appreciation for the English subject. To be considered for this award, students need to be joyful readers and skilled writers. And, as a testament to Jayne’s character, students must always demonstrate kindness and respect to their classmates and teachers, thus giving more than they receive.
