Celebrating a Year of Ideas, Heritage, and Learning

By Linda Pryor, Executive Director, The Center for Mission & Academics
As the school year draws to a close, I find myself pausing — as I always do at this time of year — to look back with gratitude at everything our community has shared. This has been a remarkable year, rich with ideas, conversations, and the kind of learning that doesn’t stop when the bell rings.

We began the year in a spirit of patriotism and reflection with our American Character Speaker Series, a meaningful celebration of the Constitution, Veterans Day, and the freedoms that define our nation. Our speakers were excellent, and we found their presentations to be a wonderful way to ground ourselves in the values that shape who we are as Americans — and as a school community dedicated to forming young people of character.

As the year unfolded, we turned our attention to the roots of Western civilization through our Classical Heritage Speaker Series, exploring the languages we teach here at Brookfield Academy. Middle and Upper School language teachers shared their expertise. It was a reminder of just how beautiful language can be and how deeply our students are engaged.
Throughout the year, books brought us together in the best possible way. Our book discussions — with parents, teachers, and students of every age — created some of the most genuine connections of the year. We read Shakespeare. We dove into historical fiction. We got to know one another not just as colleagues or classmates, but as readers and thinkers. There is something uniquely powerful about a shared story.

In March, we had the privilege of welcoming back a wonderful group of alumni for a seminar with our Upper School students. Hearing from those who sat in these very classrooms not so long ago — and seeing how they’ve grown — was both inspiring and affirming.

Our American Heritage Fair was another highlight, drawing in a remarkable number of Primary and Lower School families alongside Middle and Upper School teachers and students. The energy, the pride, and the joy of that day said everything about what this community is capable of when it comes together.

And of course, there were the historical simulations across campus — those unforgettable days that make history come to life in the most vivid way. Ellis Island Day. Gold Rush Day. County Fair Day. Egypt Day. Roman Day and others. Watch a child step into the shoes of an immigrant, a pioneer, or an ancient Roman citizen, and you’ll never question the power of experiential learning again.

But here is what I want to say most of all, as we close out another school year: for me the most treasured gift of Brookfield Academy is its people. Every speaker who gave their time. Every parent who showed up. Every teacher who went the extra mile. Every student who asked a brave question or offered a thoughtful answer. It is the relationships — the warmth, the support, the genuine investment in one another — that make everything else possible. And when I look at all that we have done together this year, I see our Mission made visible. We are not simply filling schedules or checking boxes. We are doing the deep, joyful work of graduating young people who are prepared for college and for life — educated in the skills, values, and heritage of responsible, constructive, free people. That is what our Five Star culture is really about. Not just excellence in academics, but excellence in character, community,  and purpose. And this year, as every year, you have made it shine.
