Noah Godsell '20

Alumnus Noah Godsell ‘20 is cementing his name in the sports announcing world. Currently a sophomore studying Digital Media at Valparaiso, Noah has already announced games for the world wide leader, ESPN. While a junior at Brookfield Academy, Noah visited Valparaiso for a campus tour and discovered the opportunity to announce. A later job posting on social media led Noah to apply. After arriving for his freshman year as a student, Noah was given the job as a member of the college's gameday crew. His first position was as a “grip”, a person who helps out with whatever is needed.
Noah worked his way up quickly, and now does play-by-play announcing and sideline reporting for ESPN+, while also doing camera work and other production. Noah explains that with play-by-play he is the main commentator who vocalizes the main events of the game as they happen. When Noah does sideline reporting, he supports the main commentators by adding specific details about the teams while also interviewing coaches at halftime.

Noah says, “Every game that I have to announce, there is a lot of prep and research that needs to be done. BA has helped me a lot with my work ethic and it really pays off with the effort that goes into each of these broadcasts. Often there is a short window for preparation when it comes to back-to-back games or covering different teams within a couple of days.”

Noah also credits BA for developing and improving his vocabulary and eloquence in order to present himself well on television and radio. He hopes to do sports announcing as a profession after graduation from Valparaiso. His ultimate goal is to be the announcer for the Milwaukee Bucks or to work nationally for ESPN. Although Noah mostly announces basketball, he did sideline reporting for the NIVC championship, which is described as the volleyball version of the NIT basketball tournament.
