From the First Steps to the Finish Line

By Miss Abbie Curran '17
Ever since I was old enough to have a teacher, I knew I wanted to be one. I used to look at my own teachers and think, that’s what I want to do someday. Growing up and spending every single year of my education at Brookfield Academy only made that dream stronger. By the time I was in college, and especially after, I just knew there wasn’t a better place to begin my career. There’s something about BA that’s hard to explain unless you’ve lived it. It’s special. And I truly believe I’m living proof of what Brookfield Academy hopes to cultivate in its students.
From my earliest days in Level A all the way through graduation, BA shaped so much more than just my academics. At the time, The Five Stars honestly felt like words on a wall we walked past every day. But as I’ve looked back, and now from the new perspective of being a Level A teacher here, I see how deeply they were woven into everything. They showed up in the way teachers pushed us to think bigger, in the way coaches taught us to win and lose with integrity, and in the quiet expectations to treat people with kindness and courage. When I got to college, I remember realizing almost immediately how prepared I felt. Speaking up in class didn’t scare me. Managing my time, thinking independently, and building relationships. Those things felt natural because BA had been preparing me all along.

One of the most beautiful parts of BA is the invisible thread that ties us all together. No matter where people have gone after graduation, there’s this shared understanding. It’s a bond rooted in the same Five Stars. Whether someone was here for a few years or the whole journey, we carry that same foundation with us. And I think that’s exactly why it was such an easy decision for me to come back. I didn’t just want to work at any school. I wanted to be part of this again. This community. This connection.

It truly has come full circle, as I am now a Level A teacher and a coach in the Middle and Upper School. Coaching has always been a dream of mine, and getting to do it here is just amazing. It’s so sweet to be able to invest in these students and athletes the way my own teachers and coaches once invested in me.

What makes Brookfield Academy so strong is that, in all the ways that truly matter, it hasn’t changed. The mission, the values, and the heart behind what we do are steady. And that consistency says so much. My dedication to this school is simply a reflection of how deeply I believe in it. It is an honor to help carry that legacy forward, from the first steps to the finish line.
