Congratulations to Ilina and Ishani Joshi on the remarkable achievement of each having their writing accepted for publication in the highly regarded Helicon Yale Classics Journal. The annual publication is focused on literary works of undergraduate students and only rarely considers stories from high school students. Editors of the Helicon requested writing in Latin or English on the topic of "medicine and magic." The goal of the section was to engage Middle School students who are interested in Latin and Classics. Ilina's story was written in English and titled, The Willow Lantern. It beautifully responded to the suggested theme and included lyrical imagery, "the lantern’s glow pooled at the base of an enormous oak tree," and portrayed healing rooted in "knowledge, compassion, and bravery." Ishani submitted a story written in Latin titled, The Power of Aeneid. In it, a young Roman student of medicine and rhetoric is walking to class trying to memorize a couple lines from the Aeneid when all of a sudden he helps a very sick slave in the most unexpected way possible. This impressive national recognition is a testament to the girls' talent, dedication, and bright future in the classics.
Amelia Buckley recently helped her Elmbrook Eagles Girls 14A team earn a second-place finish at the State Tournament—the best finish in Elmbrook 14U girls hockey history. She will also be competing with her WEHL team this weekend in St. Louis at the regional tournament for a chance to advance to Nationals. If you see Amelia this week, please wish her good luck!
The Patriot's Pen essay written by Level 8 student Navy Kehoe was selected as the winning entry by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post in her hometown of Pewaukee. At the awards ceremony, she recited her essay and was recognized for her dedication, creativity, and the meaningful patriotic message she shared. Navy and her sister Alyssandra (Level 4) are pictured with a member of the Pewaukee VFW Post at the award ceremony. Congratulations!
Lily Wickman (Level 5) and Genevieve Deal (Level 6) auditioned for and were cast in the Milwaukee Ballet’s Nutcracker at the Marcus Performing Arts Center. They were both cast as soldiers in the professional production, and performed throughout the entire month of December. Fulfilling this commitment took dedication and sacrifice, but you can see that performing ballet brings these girls joy! Congratulations!
Congratulations to sophomore Elioenai Samuel. She won a local pageant in the Miss America Organization and will be competing for Miss Wisconsin's Teen in June (and hopefully afterward Miss America's Teen!). Through this, she has grown her community service initiative, White Coat Wonders, where she interviews healthcare professionals to inspire teens to pursue careers in medicine. Good Luck Elioenai!
