Level A Curriculum

Phonics and Reading

At Brookfield Academy, reading is the core of the Primary and Lower Schools. Developing this skill, which is a prerequisite for so much later learning, receives a great deal of attention in the Academy’s primary grades. Teachers at all levels share literature with their students each day. Level A teaches letter sounds, and, through phonological awareness instruction, students begin reading three-letter words almost immediately. Words become sentences, and students learn punctuation as they write simple sentences. A phonics-based series is used to teach the basics of reading.

Writing

In Level A, students are learning how to correctly form letters. This is taught through several modalities, appealing to many of the students’ senses. They experience the progression of letters becoming words, and words becoming sentences. Capitalization and punctuation is taught as part of forming complete sentences.
