Spelling is aligned with our phonics curriculum with emphasis on application of sounds and patterns giving students the tools they need to become skilled and confident readers and writers.
Teachers expose students to a broad range of genres, including fiction and nonfiction, which allows them to explore different styles of writing and understand various formats and purposes of texts.
Through traditional reader series like Lippincott and Open Court, students are introduced to moral lessons found in literature. This fosters ethical understanding while engaging them with diverse stories.
Vocabulary is cultivated through the variety of reading selections. As students encounter new words in fiction and nonfiction texts, they are given opportunities to understand word meanings in context, enhancing their comprehension skills.
For the first time, students dive into chapter books, an important step in their reading journey, as they develop the ability to handle longer, more complex stories.
Writing
In Level 1, students begin utilizing foundational writing skills within a narrative. They learn to develop their ideas clearly, make intentional word choices, and organize their writing in a structured way.
