Free Market Institute

Education should do more than prepare students for jobs, it should prepare them to be free-thinking individuals.

For the past 60 years, free market economics has been an important part of Brookfield Academy’s curriculum. The founders of our school believed that in preparing students for college and life, we need to share with them the importance of a deep understanding of both personal freedom and individual responsibility. The addition of the Economics Center in the fall of 2020 gave Brookfield Academy a wing of classrooms on the west end of Patriots Hall dedicated to this core of the school’s Mission and philosophy. At that time, it was also decided that the Economics Department would integrate a Free Market Institute and develop programs for our students to learn, discuss, and experience free market principles in and beyond the classroom.

Dr. Manjula Guru, Director of the Free Market Institute, says this about the program, "Education should do more than prepare students for jobs, it should prepare them to be free-thinking individuals. But true free thinking requires more than critical analysis. It demands an understanding of the principles that support a free society."

"A key part of that foundation is economic literacy. Without knowledge of free markets, property rights, and the incentives that drive innovation, students lack the tools to think independently and act creatively. An economic way of thinking nurtures both personal responsibility and societal progress."

"That’s why Brookfield Academy’s Free Market Institute was founded - to further promote the values essential to a free society and to equip students with the ideas that sustain liberty."

In alignment with the Free Market Institute, Brookfield Academy has added a Dual Enrollment option for both Advanced Placement (AP) microeconomics and AP macroeconomics. We have partnered with a local university, Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW), which has a similar free market perspective in economics. This gives Brookfield Academy’s teachers more freedom to teach important market principles and gives families another choice for their students on our campus. Students may choose to take the AP test, receive three units of credit from CUW, or both. Students taking the Dual Enrollment option will receive three units of transferable college credits from CUW upon successful completion of the course.
