There's something electric in the air as I walk across our campus this August. It could be the smell of fresh notebooks or the satisfying click of a brand-new pen. Perhaps it's the cheerful buzz of voices reuniting with friends or the nervous excitement of meeting new teachers—and a new classroom of students. These first-day feelings are palpable and wonderful—I remember them well from years past when the school was about to get underway—but, honestly, there's something even more extraordinary waiting for all of us this year.
Beyond the fresh supplies and familiar routines lies the best part of any new school year: all the possibilities for discovery ahead. Every classroom door is a portal to a place where we will find questions we haven't thought to ask yet, ideas that will reshape how we think about the world around us, and moments when suddenly, everything clicks—those AHA moments.
Think about it: somewhere in our buildings, a child will encounter a concept that brings a smile of understanding. He’ll read a story that changes his perspective, solve a problem that seemed impossible yesterday, or make a connection between two ideas that lights up his mind like a firework. She might discover she has a talent she never knew existed, or find herself passionate about a subject she’d never considered before.
This is the real magic of a fresh start—not just the clean slate, but the blank canvas. Every lesson is another brushstroke, every question a new color added to the picture of who each child is becoming. Curiosity is the compass, and wonder is the fuel for the journey ahead.
Yes, let's celebrate the joy of new backpacks and reuniting with friends. Of course! But let's also celebrate the incredible fact that we get to spend this year growing minds, challenging thinking, and discovering just how much more there is to learn about our world.
