“A Double Security”: The Constitution’s Vertical and Horizontal Separation of Powers

The framers of the federal Constitution viewed the accumulation of governmental power as a serious threat to liberty. To guard against this danger, they devised a system that divides authority between the States and the federal government and then again amongst the various branches of government. We will discuss this ingenious design and its implications for our country today.
