Free Market Institute

More About Mr. Rottman

Bruce was a faculty member at the Providence School in Santa Barbara, CA for the past 13 years. Leaving Brookfield Academy in 2009 was difficult, but Bruce and his wife Elaine, former BA marketing and communications director, wanted to take up the challenge of working to develop a new school, and the warmer California climate was hard to pass up.
At Providence, he taught humanities, economics, and government classes and gave his students opportunities to think critically through his Socratic style of teaching.

When asked why he has chosen to return to Brookfield Academy, Bruce indicates, “I’m returning for some of the same reasons; I like a new challenge. Being on the faculty at Brookfield Academy impacted me greatly as a teacher, and I was invigorated and developed new skills in my 13 years at Providence; I am excited for a new adventure and the opportunity to conclude my career where it really took off. I’m really looking forward to working in the best school in Wisconsin, with amazing students, colleagues, and old friends.”

Bruce is excited about launching BA’s Free Market Institute as it involves philosophical principles near and dear to his passion of teaching. “I’ve always thought that ideas have consequences, and promoting markets really promotes human flourishing. So, getting speakers, exposing students, parents, and the community to excellent ideas – that’s powerful. Our world needs these ideas; not so much new ideas, but an introduction to some time-tested ideas for the new challenges of our era.”
