Free Market Institute

Mr. Bruce Rottman

". . . getting speakers, exposing students, parents, and the community to excellent ideas – that’s powerful. Our world needs these ideas; not so much new ideas, but an introduction to some time-tested ideas for the new challenges of our era."

For the past 60 years, free market economics has been an important part of Brookfield Academy’s curriculum. The founders of our school believed that in preparing students for college and life, we need to share with them the importance of a deep understanding of both personal freedom and individual responsibility. The addition of the Economics Center in the fall of 2020 gave Brookfield Academy a wing of classrooms on the west end of Patriots Hall dedicated to this core of the school’s Mission and philosophy. At that time, it was also decided that the Economics Department would integrate a Free Market Institute and develop programs for our students to learn, discuss, and experience free market principles in and beyond the classroom.

In alignment with the Free Market Institute, Brookfield Academy will be adding a Dual Enrollment option for both Advanced Placement (AP) microeconomics and AP macroeconomics this fall. We will partner with a local university, Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW), which has a similar free market perspective in economics. This will give Brookfield Academy’s teachers more freedom to teach important market principles and give families another choice for their students on our campus. Students may choose to take the AP test, receive three units of credit from CUW, or both. Students taking the Dual Enrollment option will receive three units of transferable college credits from CUW upon successful completion of the course.

The Free Market Institute calls for a director who will oversee it and advance the programming to the larger community. We are pleased to announce that Mr. Bruce Rottman, who previously taught history and economics in the Brookfield Academy Upper School for 17 years, has accepted the role as Director of the Free Market Institute. Working with the Center for Mission & Academics, he will serve as liaison to academic programs and have the vision and expertise to move the Free Market Institute successfully forward.

In addition to his responsibilities with the Free Market Institute, Bruce will also teach regular and AP microeconomics and Dual Enrollment classes in the Upper School. Previously when he taught in the Upper School, Bruce was always a well-prepared professional who could be counted on to provide clear and creative lessons to students. He consistently challenged them to think but also had a knack of making the most difficult topics understandable.

  • More About Mr. Rottman

Bruce was a faculty member at the Providence School in Santa Barbara, CA for the past 13 years. Leaving Brookfield Academy in 2009 was difficult, but Bruce and his wife Elaine, former BA marketing and communications director, wanted to take up the challenge of working to develop a new school, and the warmer California climate was hard to pass up.
