Dress Code

Upper School

Boys

  • All shirts must have a collar, such as a knit polo shirt or a button-down dress shirt. Turtlenecks are acceptable.
  • Shirts must be tucked in at all times.


Girls

  • Shirts without collars may be worn if the neckline is modest and the shirt is loose fitting. Shirts must be long enough that the midriff is never exposed.
  • No spaghetti straps, strapless shirts, or sheer fabrics.
  • Shirts with tails must be tucked in.


All students

  • No T-shirts, with an exception for BA shirts on designated spirit wear days.
  • No writing or pictures on any shirts.
  • No tank tops.
  • No camouflage or Goth-like apparel or accessories.
  • Clothing must cover all undergarments.
  • Sweatshirts, sweaters, and vests must be worn over collared shirts.
  • BA sweatshirts, crew neck or hooded, are allowed if worn over a proper shirt. Sweatshirts are not allowed on designated dress up days. No other sweatshirts may be worn, including college sweatshirts.
  • Spirit Days: BA T-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, and approved BA tops may be worn with regular school dress each Monday.


Pants/Shorts

  • Regular cut cotton, blend, or corduroy pants with a plain or pleated front may be worn.
  • Pants should be fitted at the waist and should not be saggy or dropped at the crotch.
  • No black, gray, blue, or faded jeans. No camouflage or leather.
  • No yoga pants, stretch pants, jogging pants, wind pants, or overalls.
  • No torn, shredded, or frayed pants or shorts.
  • During the months of September, May, and June, shorts no shorter than 3" above the knee and capri/cropped pants may be worn. Styles must adhere to the style and fabric guidelines for pants. No baggy pockets.
  • No bike, athletic, or spandex shorts.


Dresses/Jumpers/ Skirts

  • Dresses need not have collars, but all other criteria for blouses/tops must be observed.
  • No slits above the knee.
  • Hems should be no more than 3" above the knee.
  • No torn, shredded, or frayed fabrics.
  • Skorts are acceptable if they are of appropriate length and are tailored.


Footwear

  • Socks must be worn with pants and shorts; they are not required with dresses and skirts.


Outerwear

  • Hats or other head coverings may not be worn in school.
  • Coats, winter boots, or other outerwear may not be worn in school.


Grooming

Boys
  • Must be clean shaven. Sideburns must not extend below the earlobe.
  • Hair must be neatly combed and may not extend below the eyebrows, below the earlobe, or over the collar.
  • No earrings.
All students
  • Bizarre hair cuts or colors are not permitted.
  • Hair must be kept a natural color.
  • Visible tattoos or body piercings are not allowed (except girls' ears).


Dress Up Days

All students are expected to dress up when they represent BA at a sports event with another school. Boys must wear a dress shirt and tie and long pants; girls must wear a dress or skirt. No shorts. Every Friday is dress up day.

The Division Head reserves the right to determine if a student is dressed or groomed appropriately. If a student is not dressed properly, he or she may be sent home or parents will be called to bring in suitable clothing.
